Frequently asked questions.
How is fuel cost calculated?
Fuel cost = (total miles ÷ MPG) × price per gallon. For a round trip, the distance is doubled before calculating. This gives you an accurate estimate of how much you'll spend on gas.
How do I find my car's MPG?
Your car's window sticker shows EPA-estimated MPG, but real-world MPG varies. Check your dashboard's trip computer after a fill-up, or calculate manually: miles driven ÷ gallons refilled.
Does highway vs city driving affect the estimate?
Yes. Highway driving typically gives 5–10 MPG more than city driving. If your trip is mostly highway, use the higher end of your car's MPG range. Most cars display both ratings.
What about electric vehicles?
For EVs, enter the MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) and local electricity cost per gallon-equivalent. Most EVs get 80–100 MPGe, making fuel costs significantly lower than gas vehicles.
